Basketball game will honor cancer survivors, Relay for Life

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A lot of spectators at Wednesday’s West Brunswick High School basketball game against Whiteville will be decked out in pink.

According to West Brunswick’s website, it’s all part of the school’s Pink Game tradition to honor cancer survivors and raise money for Relay for Life.

Brunswick County landfill closed for holidays

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The Brunswick County landfill will be closed on Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 24 and 25, along with Tuesday, Jan. 1 for the holidays, according to the county's website.

The county convenience sites will be closed on Monday only.

Christmas on the River to take place Dec. 1

SHALLOTTE, NC (WECT) – Christmas on the River, an event put on by the Brunswick County Chamber of Commerce, will take place Saturday, Dec. 1, according to the chamber’s website.

The event will host arts and crafts vendors, a stew cook-off, Santa, live music, Christmas trees for sale and more from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Shallotte Riverside Park.

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Just in time for fall, The Sunset River Marketplace in Calabash will be hosting a series of upcoming workshops, according to its website.

The following classes, along with the days that they will be taught are below:

Nearly $130K awarded to six Brunswick Co. fire departments

Nearly $130K awarded to six Brunswick Co. fire departments

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Over $8 million was awarded to over 600 fire departments across the state recently through the 2012 Volunteer Fire Department Fund.

The Fund was created in 1988 to provide dollar-for-dollar matching grants to assist volunteer fire departments, according to a news release from Insurance Commissioner and State Fire Marshall Wayne Goodwin. A total of $8,717,495.18 was awarded to 644 departments and some of that money is going to Brunswick County. Here’s the list of local grants:

  • N.W. Volunteer Fire/Rescue Department, Inc., $24,775.97
  • Navassa Volunteer Fire Department, $30,000
  • Shallotte Point Volunteer Fire Department, Inc., $11,810.75
  • Sunset Harbor and Zion Hill Vol. Fire Department, Inc., $14,105
  • Winnabow Volunteer Fire Department, Inc., $30,000
  • Yaupon Beach Volunteer Fire Department, Inc., $19,151.67

“I’m proud that so many fire departments are taking advantage of this important grant program. These grants help our volunteer fire departments stretch their budgets to better serve our communities,” stated Goodwin in a news release.

Chamber of Commerce fills goodie buckets for Travel and Tourism Week

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – National Travel and Tourism Week is going on across the country during the first week of May.

The Brunswick County Chamber of Commerce will have buckets filled with goodies donated by members in honor of Travel and Tourism Week. Stop by the Chamber office located at 4948 Main Street in Shallotte to pick up your bucket.

There are only 75 buckets, so it’s first come, first serve.

Cerro Gordo man arrested for stealing tools, bedding from Shallotte Walmart

SHALLOTTE, NC (WECT) – A Cerro Gordo man was arrested recently for stealing from the Shallotte Walmart.

Jerry Lee Putnam, 47, was charged with shoplifting after he took two Stanley tool sets and a comforter, valued at $222.72, from the Walmart on Sunday morning, according to the Shallotte Police Department arrest report.

Putnam, who also had four outstanding warrants at the time of his arrest, was booked into the Brunswick County Detention Center under a $2,000 secured bond.
