Board of Elections to decide whether or not to have Sunday early voting hours

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The Brunswick County Board of Elections will meet Monday to decide whether or not to extend early voting hours to Sunday.

Brunswick County Commissioner Charles Warren and several area ministers are making the push for the Sunday voting hours. Warren said many minorities in the county attend church on Sunday mornings and some area churches have expressed interest in bussing people to polls to make voting easier.

Right now, there are no early voting hours scheduled for Sundays.

The board will meet Monday at 9 a.m. in their office at the Brunswick County Government Complex.

Man takes swing at preacher before church bomb threat

OCEAN ISLE BEACH, NC (WECT) – The Brunswick County Sheriff's Office was called to the Beach Assembly of God in Ocean Isle Beach last Sunday for a report of a bomb threat, according to Detective John Holman.

An off-duty deputy, who was attending the church, witnessed Chris Walker, of Wilmington, go from room to room slapping people on the back and saying "bless you," Holman said. Walker was also heard speaking in tongues.

After Walker slapped the preacher's wife on the back, the preacher and the off-duty deputy approached the man. That is when Walker took a swing at the preacher. The deputy and other members of the church were able to restrain the man until backup could arrive.

As Walker was being taken to a deputy's vehicle, he began yelling "Bomb, bomb, bomb, everyone is done," according to Holman. Deputies found no evidence of a bomb at the church.
