BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A senator from Brunswick County will soon become a co-chairman of the Senate Finance Committee.

According to a press release, Senate President Pro Tempore Phil Berger (R-Rockingham) announced Thursday he plans to appoint Sen. Bill Rabon (R-Brunswick) and Sen. Bob Rucho (R-Mecklenburg) when the legislature convenes early next year.

"Senators Rucho and Rabon are both hard-working legislators whose commitment to balancing the state budget without raising taxes will serve the Finance Committee well," said Berger in a press release. "As the economy continues to recover, their leadership will be instrumental to reforming our antiquated tax system to encourage growth, lure businesses to North Carolina and jumpstart private sector job creation."

New group in Brunswick County to help advocate for the poor

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A new group in Brunswick County wants to give a voice to the underserved. The poor and low income population often feel left out when leaders make decisions or policies. The North Carolina Black Leadership Caucus hopes to help with that.

The state-wide organization recently created a chapter in Brunswick County.

“This organization is about low-wealth people, people of color and anyone concerned,” said state chairman Walter Rogers, Sr.

People from all over the state will meet Saturday at 11 a.m. at 162 Ocean Boulevard West in Holden Beach. People will have the opportunity to talk about issues that affect them.

Brunswick County Commissioner Charles Warren is the chairman of the local chapter. He said once his term expires as a commissioner, he will be able to give people a voice through the organization.
