BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Effective immediately, the Town of Ocean Isle Beach is stepping up patrols along the beaches in response to recent drownings in Brunswick County.
Mayor Debbie Smith says the two police officers who already patrol the beach will now be joined by other first responders, who are trained in water rescues.
All vehicles that are used to patrol the beach will now be equipped with floatation devices that can be used to help rescue distressed swimmers.
The town is also exploring the costs associated with incorporating a red flag warning system to alert swimmers of potential dangerous swimming conditions.
Smith says that all the Brunswick beach communities will hold a meeting in August with the county government to discuss what other options should be considered.
