Local fishing rig business hooks big-name stores

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Small businesses work hard to sell their product wherever they can. In less than a year, one Brunswick County man has captured the attention of some of the biggest names in retail.

Fishing is a way of life for some people – for others, it's considered to be more of a hobby.

Kyle Warren had the idea for his fishing rig business when he couldn't reel in a steady job.

"Work was just really hard to find, and if there was some work, it was one or two days," said Warren. "It just wasn't cutting it."

He's made fishing rigs since he was a kid, and now, he's hoping those rigs will support his family.

"I told myself it was time to do something," said Warren.

He started selling the rigs local shops. Pretty soon, the rigs were flying off the shelves.

"I guess I had the best problem you could have, and that was not being able to keep up with demand," he said.

Warren is increasing his output now that he's hooked big-name suppliers like Walmart and Bass Pro Shop to carry his rigs, but he says he's not as concerned as others might be about profits.

"It's just a good feeling to me, watching people catch fish," Warren explains.

He includes an information booklet with each handmade rig. Warren said it helps beginners learn the basics.

Warren and Turner rigs are expected to hit shelves by April. Until then, you can find them in Shallotte and Ocean Isle Beach.
