BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The Brunswick County Department of Social Services is reaching out to the public to raise awareness about elder abuse and protect seniors in our area.
On Thursday, they held an event to highlight “Elder Abuse” and other issue facing the elderly population in our county.
Dozens of active elders and other community members came out to the Brunswick County Government Center for the 2nd annual “Walk, Roll & Stroll."
Activities included walking and dancing, and information booths from various vendors representing both public and private organizations that serve the elderly.
The event was highlighted by a concert from the Mostly Bluegrass Society band and a performance from the Gatorettes, a local dancing/cheerleading group of ladies who are 55 years of age and older.
The event is part of Elder Abuse Awareness month which started on Mother's Day and ends this weekend on Father's Day.
Brunswick County Adult Services Supervisor Patty Myers says there are very few events in Brunswick County that highlight the elderly population.
She says it's important for our community to be more aware of the elder abuse prevention and other issues facing the elderly.
