Shallotte Middle SRO plans Memorial Day remembrance ceremony

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The resource officer at Shallotte Middle School is planning a Memorial Day remembrance ceremony at the school Friday.

The event will take place in the gym, 9-10 a.m. and will honor our fallen heroes. The ceremony will also serve as a time to celebrate being an American.

Tentative guest speakers include Congressman Mike McIntyre and Capt. Fred Gore.

Art comes to life at 10th annual Gotta Have Art show

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Throughout the year Jessie Mae Monroe Elementary students have explored the life and culture of children in Africa, Australia, and Asia. 

Through artistic impression, their learning has been brought to life and now everyone can experience their work at the 10th annual Gotta Have Art show!

Crawl through a student-made cave and experience student art work lining the hallways.  Listen as students demonstrate their musical skills.  This one of a kind art show is a feast for the senses!

The event is Tuesday, May 14 from 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m.  Admission is free

Sunset Beach receives grant for town park

 

SUNSET BEACH, NC (WECT) – Sunset Beach officials are celebrating a big win for the town. According to Councilwoman Karen Joseph, the town of Sunset Beach was awarded a grant for the developments of its town park.

The grant is worth more than $400,000. The money will be given to the town by the North Carolina Parks and Recreation Trust Fund.

Joseph says the next step for the council is to review park proposals and requests to be part of the project.

Secondary schools in Brunswick Co. to begin first for 2013-14 school year

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A spokesperson for the Brunswick County Board of Education announced Tuesday night that for the upcoming 2013-2014 school year, secondary schools will begin first, and elementary schools will begin second.

The decision came after input from the community and a discussion at the board's regularly-called meeting.

The following is a summary of the school start times:

North High      7:45-2:45    South High       7:45-2:45    West High      7:45-2:45

Project Fitness showcases elementary track and field stars

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - In keeping with a longstanding Brunswick County tradition, students from all elementary schools will compete this week in the 23rd annual Project Fitness.

Project Fitness, the brainchild of Nelson Best and Ron Champion, began in 1990 as a high school event.  Over the years the fun trickled into the middle and elementary schools.  While track and field has now replaced the event in secondary schools, the tradition continues each year for elementary students. 

The event is a fun field day that showcases the best of the best in the following fitness events: one-mile run, 800 meter run, 600 meter run, 400 meter run, 100 yard dash, 50 yard dash, the standing long jump, pull ups, flex arm hang, and 4 x 100 relay.  

Students compete in two age categories, 8-9 year olds and 10+.
The event begins at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 2 at South Brunswick High School.

Elementary Science Olympiad debuts in Brunswick County

Brunswick County Schools is proud to host the inaugural Elementary Science Olympiad Tournament on Saturday, May 4th at Cedar Grove Middle School.

The following elementary schools are participating: Bolivia, Southport, Supply, Town Creek, Union, Virginia Williamson, and Waccamaw. This is an exciting opportunity to support our students with STEM (Science-Technology-Engineering-Math) education.

The New Hanover tournament started to reach capacity, thus inspiring us to start our own! We are proud of the commitment of our students and staff who are participating. The fun begins at 8:30 a.m. with the awards ceremony at 1:00 p.m.

SUPPLY, NC (April 29, 2013) – Brunswick Electric Membership Corporation is awarding two local students Touchstone Energy Sports Camp scholarships to summer basketball camps at two of the state’s largest college campuses.

Clara Elizabeth Tyson of Leland Middle School will attend the N.C. State Women’s Basketball Camp, and D’Kwanshe Stanley of Shallotte Middle School will attend the Roy Williams Carolina Basketball Camp, both on full scholarships from BEMC.  Clara is the daughter of Beth Tyson. D’Kwanshe is the son of LaChella and Joseph Stanley.
