Coupon workshop teaches hundreds how to save money | Business

SHALLOTTE, NC (WECT) - With an economy not where it used to be, many people are always on the lookout for new ways to save money, and as some discovered Saturday morning, there's an art to it.

More than 250 shoppers came from as far as Fayetteville to Shallotte to learn how to save from one of the most popular coupon bloggers in the country.

Jenny Martin founded Southern Savers a few years ago and occasionally holds workshops.

She says the reality shows seen on TV that depict extreme couponers are not realistic -- it may be fun to watch people buy 30 deodorant sticks for a dollar, but it's not what people want in reality.

On the other hand, she says couponing can save people hundreds of dollars a month.

“I mean, we went from me calling my husband saying, ‘Please don't eat lunch today -- we have no money in the bank,’ to saving,” said Marin. “We save around $400 a month.”
