Operation Christmas Crackdown: Deputies make several drug arrests

This van was initially pulled over for a seatbelt violation, but deputies found drugs inside the vehicle.

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Deputies in Brunswick County hit the streets early Wednesday morning in an effort to round up 30-40 people wanted across the county for drug charges.

Officials say the suspects made the list for "Operation Christmas Crackdown" after months of investigations and confirmed sales of drugs and/or guns.

Law enforcement caught nearly two dozen people on the list in only a few hours. Three additional arrests were also made, including a routine traffic stop that turned into a drug arrest.

Those on the round up list who were not arrested are now wanted.

SURVEILLANCE VIDEO: Deputies offer reward for information about armed robbery

Deputies with the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office are investigating an armed robbery that happened at Winners World Thursday morning.

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Deputies with the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office are investigating an armed robbery that happened at Winners World Thursday morning.

According to the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office, the robbery happened around 6:00 a.m.

There were two people involved, both identified as black males. One was heavy built about 270-300 pounds with no mask. The other male was tall and slim about 170 pounds with a mask covering his face.

The amount of cash that was taken is unknown. Both men left in a car in an unknown direction.

Officials said they are investigating a death relating to the incident.

There is a $500 reward for the arrest and conviction of the two subjects involved in this robbery.

Man accused of murdering 86-year-old woman indicted

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The man accused of recently killing an 86-year-old woman in Brunswick County was indicted by a grand jury Monday.

According to officials, Richard Grissett, 51 of Shallotte, was indicted with the first degree murder of Linnie Mae Ward, in addition to possession of a firearm by a felon and first degree burglary.

An indictment means the jury believes the prosecution has enough evidence to move forward with a trial. Grisset's next court date is scheduled for January 8.

Detectives say Ward was found dead in her home on Gwynn Road in Longwood Nov. 13. A deputy found her body when he was met by a relative of Ward's who was at her home to check on her.

The sheriff's office said the autopsy revealed Ward died from strangulation and blunt force trauma to the face.

Boyfriend accused of strangling and kidnapping girlfriend

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A man is behind bars and accused of strangling his own girlfriend.

Turner Chadwick Gray III was arrested by the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office after deputies said he grabbed his girlfriend by the neck and cut off her air supply.

Gray is also accused of kidnapping her and taking her somewhere without her consent.

According to arrest warrants, his girlfriend tried to call 911 on her cell phone, but he allegedly took it away from her so she couldn't communicate with anyone.

Gray also told her he would "kill her and her family" during the time of the assault.

Gray is in the Brunswick County Jail under a $125,000 bond.

He is charged with communicating threats, interfering with emergency communications, assault by strangulation and second degree kidnapping.

ARRESTED: Man in custody in connection to recent homicide case

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Deputies with the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office announced Tuesday they have a man in custody they believe was involved in the death of 86-year-old Linnie Mae Ward.

According to officials, Richard Grissett, 51 of Shallotte, was arrested and charged with murder Monday night. They said evidence leads them to believe Grissett robbed Ward the night she was killed.

Deputies recovered rifle in a pond at Grissett's home that he had taken from Ward.

Sheriff's said Grissett and Ward lived 10 minutes apart and that they knew of each other, but didn't have daily contact.

Exercise helps officials learn to better respond to those with special needs

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Emergency officials in Brunswick County are taking part in a two-day exercise to improve their response for people in the area with special needs.

According to Emergency Services Deputy Director Scott Garner, the exercise will help officials better know how to provide service for residents who require assistance during an emergency.

Volunteers from the community will take part in the simulation exercise to give officials hands-on practice.
